The European Aeronautic Defense and Space Company, the global leader in aerospace defense and related services, will now be hailed as the Airbus Group. The parent group of airplane manufacturer Airbus will utilize the ‘Airbus’ brand, as it divides the newly formed group into three divisions – commercial aircraft, defense and space, and helicopters.

In a press release, EADS announced the change would occur at the beginning of 2014 and would take several months to complete. CEO Tom Enders referred to the move as an “evolution” rather than a “revolution”, calling the name change the “next logical step in the development of the company.”

The announcement is seen as a bid for EADS to capitalize on the increasingly powerful and important ‘Airbus’ brand, as the European aviation giant and employer of 133,000 people continues its battle with American counterpart Boeing who maintained the highest number of orders and deliveries in 2012.

The announcement illuminates a component of a general strategy review where EADS raised Airbus’ 2013 order target by 25 percent.

The move is viewed as a stride toward a more commercially focused approach for the company, replacing a traditional military focus.
